Quench or Quell

Quench your thirst. You don't hear that word in any other context. It means to satisfy with water. It means to extinguish. One synonym would be "quell."

Quell means to 1 put an end to something, usually in a forceful way. 2. pacify or suppress bad feeling: to allay a disturbing feeling or thought in a reassuring way.

Question: where do these "QU" words come from? Apparently they come from Middle or Old English from Old High German.

Another interesting synonym: squelch.

Squelch!

I hope I have been able to quench, quell, and squelch your curiosity about these words!

If you want to Quell the Hot Flash, I have a video coming soon!

Uneek Spelling

OK,

I've been thinking about this for awhile. Don't you just hate that when orthography keeps you up at night?

Unique. I think this spelling is very misleading. I think it would be much more forthright to spell it u-n-e-e-k.

Where did Q come from? It's very unusual in English, very strange... stranger... alien, even!

And when we pair it with U, which we usually do it sounds like "kw" as in Queen. Very queer, indeed.

So there is just no reason to put the QUE on the end of that word. Let's just go with uneek. That's unambiguous. I can't think of any other way to pronounce it.

All in favor say, Aye. Now there's another word we need to re-spell...

Quintessential Quandary

"On this planet, normal equals insane." – Eckhart Tolle

Just a quixotic quote from the pundit, Eckhart Tolle, from his book, A New Earth.

Is that right? I need an adjective which starts with a Q. Let’s try:
Just a quantum quote from the quarrelsome Eckhart Tolle, from his book, A New Earth.
Or maybe:
Just a quirky quote from the quizzical Eckhart Tolle, from his book, A New Earth.

I’ll go with:
Just a quizzical quote from the pundit, Eckhart Tolle, from his quintessential book, A New Earth.

Adjectives starting with Q:
Quantum – a popular term right now, but no one knows what it means except my friend’s son who is studying nuclear physics.
Quarrelsome – argumentative, cantankerous, querulous.
Quintessential – most essential, concentrated, or purest (form of something). Latin.
Quixotic - idealistic, unrealistic, impractical, or romantic. From the fictional character Don Quixote 1605.
Quizzical – bewildered, confused, or odd.
